Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998) was an esotericist and metaphysician. Of German origin from Alsace, he worked originally as a textile designer in Paris, but was naturally inclined towards mysticism and Gnosticism. He immersed himself in the Vedanta as well as becoming interested in Christianity and Islam. As a result, he started a correspondence with René Guénon who lived in Cairo, Egypt. Initiated by some important Sufi masters, he founded one of the first branches of Esoteric Islamic thought in Europe founded on the “Sophia Perennis”. At the end of his life, he immigrated to America.
He wrote a number of works including "De l'unité transcendante des religions"(The Transcendent Unity of Religions), “L'oeil du coeur" (The Eye of the Heart), “Images of Spirit” (Images de l'esprit), “Understanding Islam” (Comprendre l'islam), “Le soufisme, voile et quintessence" (Sufism, Veil and Quintessence).
