 Papus, Gérard Encausse (1865-1916), is a great figure of French occultism. Doctor in medicine, his aim was to fight against scientism of his time spreading a way of thinking fed at the origin of Western esotericism. Incontestable leader, he claimed not to be a thaumaturgist or an inspired, he presented himself as a scientist and an experimenter.

Belonging to many initiatory organizations, he founded the Martinist Order with Augustin Chaboseau in 1891, under the influence of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin's thought. Having published a huge amount of books, he was called the "Balzac" of occultism, he let 160 books, almanacs, articles and reviews. Here Yves-Fred Boisset, director of the review "L'initiation" founded by Papus in 1888, talks about him.
