The megaliths in Mayenne

History > Megalith
By : Kate Masters -  Monday, 14 March 2011 00:00
masters_megalithes Located between Brittany and Normandy, Mayenne is a region rich in megaliths. These stones, from the Greek (big) and lithos (stone), are the first forms of architecture known in the world. They are fascinating by their size, the mystery of their origins and the various legends which are bounded to it.  To the man of the Neolithic, man and cosmos were in continuous interaction: these monuments probably have a cultural function and were used as a canal to link the sensible world with the spirit world.
Since they didn't let any decipherable writing, the neolithic civilization can only be read through these stone buildings called dolmens, menhirs or cromlechs.
Thanks to Kate Masters, artist and international lecturer, we take a walk in that region, Mayenne, in which stones of that remote time are scattered.

We discover their meaning, their differences, the building techniques, the legends and the superstitions which today still make these stone living matter... a unique opportunity to get closer from these megaliths from a historical, artistic and legendary point of view.

A presentation in French and English which lasts 74 minutes.
