Georges Ivanoff Gurdjieff (1866 -1949) was a celebrated figure in Esotericism and the founder of the Fourth Way, an initiation teaching. Born in Armenia, it is believed he belonged to a society called ‘The Seekers of Truth’ which he discovered through the course of various trips to Egypt, Palestine, Mongolia, India, etc. He also spent time in various unknown monasteries and was instructed by various secret societies. In 1912, he settled in Moscow as a rug merchant and began to bring together various disciples whom he initiated – through direct contact with self - into genuine spiritual awareness.
In order to locate the real self within the personality, he taught various different techniques whose aim was to dismantle all forms of conditioning and re-align a person’s life force to the cosmic order. He also introduced the geometric figure of the enneagram.
He is the author of three books: "Beelzebub’s Tales to his Grandson", "Meetings with Remarkable Men" and "Life is only Real, Then When I am".
