Henry Corbin (1903-1978) was a philosopher, orientalist and a specialist of Iranian Islam and Shi’ite Gnosis. He studied and translated, amongst other things, the work of Ibn Arabi, Haydar Amoli and Sohrawardi, whose ‘Eastern theosophy’ consequently directed his own philosophical outlook. Attached to the French Institute of Istanbul, he was given the responsibility of setting up the Iranian department in Tehran. In 1954, he was made Director of Islamic Studies and Religions of Arabia at the French University: ‘l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes de Paris’ (EPHE). In 1974, he founded the International Centre for Comparative Spiritual Research at the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem University.
His writings include books such as: "Le paradoxe du monothéisme", (The Paradox of Monotheism), "Face de Dieu, face de l'homme" (Facing God, Facing Man), "L'alchimie comme art hiératique", (Alchemy as a Hierarchical Art) , "Histoire de la philosophie islamique" (The History of Islamic Philosophy), "L'imagination créatrice dans le soufisme d'Ibn Arabî" (The Creative Imagination of Ibn Arabi’s Sufism) , "L'homme de lumière dans le soufisme iranien" (The Man of Light in Iranian Sufism), etc.
