Papus, Gérard Encausse (1865-1916), was a French occultist. A medical doctor passionately interested in all the Western occult doctrines, he dedicated himself to fighting against the scientism of his age. He was affiliated to various initiatic orders, such as Martinism, the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, the Theosophical Society, The Kabbalistic Order of the Rosy-Cross, the Gnostic Church, The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Freemasonry, the Swedenborg Rite, The Rite of Memphis-Misraïm and others. In addition, he founded ‘l’Initiation’, a review in 1888, all the while actively researching Western Esotericism.
A natural leader, he was also involved in teaching and equally applied himself to undertaking an impressive list of theatre production. It is believed he took his name from the work “Nucteremon” by Apollonius of Tyane.
He is the author of “Traité élémentaire de science occulte" (Elementary Treatise on the Occult Sciences), “Traité élémentaire de magie pratique" (Elementary Treatise on Practical Magic), "Les Arts divinatoires", (The Divinatory Arts) "Qu'est-ce que l'occultisme ? » (What is Occultism?) "La Cabbale" (The Kabbalah), etc.
