At the Institut du Monde Arabe (Institute of Arab World), Eric Geoffroy, Michel Cazenave, Vincent Aucante and Fabrice Midal talked in a debate led by Bernadette Sauvaget, about the release of a book by Eric Geoffroy "Islam will be spiritual or won't be anymore" edited by the Seuil editions.
Post modernity, of which Nietzsche is the great prophet, testifies of a kind of surpassing of the world and traditional societies mark which shows kind of nihilism, says Eric Geoffroy. Facing technological disillusionment and religious materialism, what is the place of spirituality?
Now that institutional religions reached fundamentalism and religion death, how to redefine spirituality?
To each participant, it is time to take into account that the "sky closes", that everyone has to re enchant the world and to add to dialectic thought, inspiration. To Vincent Aucante, it's about revivify religion memory and to reevaluate their inheritance. To Fabrice Midal, to try to live experience of fragile, poetic and freedom in a world without landmarks.
Michel Cazenave resumes the symbolical quest and is in a tradition without being the prisoner of it. Appeared during the 8th century, Sufism is a spiritual, mystic and ascetic movement of Islam. Taking roots in Sunnite orthodoxy, it is also an esotericist way of thinking.
To Eric Geoffroy, Sufism is, indeed, the meeting point between Philosophia Perennis, the original base and Islam. Of all eternity, its spiritual and transcendental essence doesn't depend on any space and temporal context. The initiated man, which holds it, can reveal it and transmit it.
