The life and personality of Joseph Balsamo (1743-1793), alias the Count of Cagliostro, thaumaturge and initiate of the Rosy-Cross. A disciple of the Count of Saint German, an alchemist and a mysterious adventurer, he brought Egyptian Freemasonry to France and was accused there of sorcery in 1786. Imprisoned then released over the affair of the queen’s necklace, he exiled himself to Italy where he was arrested by the Holy Inquisition for Masonic practises and subsequently incarcerated until his death.
