"The Spirit uses my hand"... "I'm not just following the orders" these are the statements of these medium painters, visionary or mystic that Michel Ternoy (psychologists and searcher within the frame of his works in psychiatric hospitals) worked. Going from Hildegarde de Bingen to Augustin Lesage, Michel Ternoy tries to show a coherence in grapho-pictorial forms of his own patients and of these artists that were gathered under the name Outsider art. The questions, fascinating, are numerous.
How many voices do these artists hear? If Hildegarde de Bingen admits that all his life he only heard one voice, can we think that this one comes from the Sky and to identify it as divine origin? Do we have to join one voice to pure mystic and the case of "plural voices" - as in the case of Augustin Lesage - to hallucination?
Mystic, in its pictorial expression, is it a "put in order" and the hallucination placed under the sign of breaking, of dissociation? Do we find the announcing signs of their gifts? How to explain that all these artists have in common this "ignorance position" that is to say that their works are not the return of an accumulated knowledge but on the contrary complete autodidacts deeds which execution has not only, according their words, a function of intermediary? What are the parts in presence: psychotic delirium? Divine Presence? What biographic analogies can we establish among all these painters? Do their works bear the track of common "signature"? Think about it in this 60-minutes presentation filmed at the Collège des Bernardins within the framework of an homage to Peintre T'ANG HAYWEN organized by Mrs Hélène de Laguérie.
