First 32-minute part of an original interview about the famous cartoon hero, Corto Maltese. Joel Grégogna, author of “Corto the Initiate" (Dervy, 2008), pays homage first to his creator, Hugo Pratt (1927-1967), bringing to light certain elements about Pratt’s life.
Then he delineates Corto Maltese as an archetypal, initiatory figure, whilst simultaneously explaining his own method of analysis: bringing together the scattered pieces of the mythological puzzle made by the hero’s peregrinations in order to draw out their central substance. This is a way for the reader or spectator, not to take on the ‘truth’ of Hugo Pratt, or indeed that of Corto Maltese, but the truth of their own self.... a truth that reveals itself to the extent they are prepared to look for it.
